Camp Motutapu

Getting There

Who knew an old army base would hold the key to so much fun, discovery and challenge for our Senior Class students (and 7 parents and teachers)?

It all began on  a sunny, autumn morning after weeks of preparation and anticipation. As we gathered at the ferry terminal, you could feel the excitement rising with every new arrival. However, the official welcome was marked by coloured bandanas that were handed out.  These held in their threads team spirit and would act as witness to our many adventures through hot and cold, through water and mud, victories and losses.

Soon enough, our boat arrived and we began to load our luggage and say our farewells. The thrill of anticipation had the children in a flurry of excitement and impatience to get things started while many a parent were silently and bravely battling with their own emotions.

After what seemed like an interminable journey, we arrived safe and sound on the other side.  Our first attempt at getting a chain gang going left a lot of room for improvement but let me assure you, we became quite the experts by the end.  Once on the island, we had morning tea and prepared for a 4 km hike through farmland to our camp. This was our first challenge and one of our easiest!
